Synthesis on Intelligent Transportation System Applications and Automated Technologies for Motorcyclists

Dates: Completed April 2022

Project Role: Research Lead

Focus Areas: Qualitative Research, Literature Review, Focus Groups

Project Overview

The Motorcycle Advisory Committee was established in 2017 by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and aims to provide the Federal Highway Safety Administration (FHWA) with recommendations to improve motorcyclist safety through infrastructure improvements and other countermeasures. These recommendations were provided in a series of reports addressing a variety of countermeasures, including barrier design, roadway geometry, and other maintenance practices. The purpose of this report is to address the state of practice and knowledge regarding technological applications in motorcycles, such as automated systems.

Project Artifacts

This artifact highlights selected pages from the final report I authored for this project. These pages focus on findings from two focus groups conducted to support this project, aimed at exploring the safety needs and perceptions of emerging technologies from motorcyclists’ perspectives. Results showed that motorcyclists were concerned about overreliance on technology, but also recognized its potential to improve reaction times, especially for newer riders.
